Small Business CRM is Here to Stay
If you ask most small business owners what priority
CRM has in their short-term business plans, chances
are you’ll get more than one blank stare. The fact
is that most small business owners don’t even know
what CRM is not to mention how significantly it can
benefit their growing company. This prevailing
ignorance of small business CRM (customer
relationship management) usually stems from just
a few basic causes.

NOKIA SHOWS (NON-PHONE)WiFi DEVICE
Nokia has unveiled a new device which relies on WiFi rather than
cellular networks to connect to the Web and send email. The Nokia 770
Internet Tablet is aiming for those connecting to Internet in their
homes. This is Nokia's second response to the twin criticisms it faced a
year ago: That it did not offer clam-shell phones, and that it was a bit
thin in the smartphone/PDA dematement. The new device demonstrates
Nokia's determination to reach beyond the cellphone market and position
itself to compete more effectively with laptop and personal organizer
makers. The device features a touch-sensitive screen and is a bit larger
than typical personal organizers. It also uses Linux. Nokia will update
the device's software to support Internet telephony early next year. The
device will be available in the third quarter for about $350.

TELL ME WHAT I'LL BE SICK FROM TOMORROW
Doctors tell us what's wrong with our bodies today. Computer
scientist Astro Teller says his BodyMedia devices and software will
predict what is going wrong tomorrow. Within a year, Teller expects them
to have ten times their current store of data, enough, he says, to write
programs that may predict when someone will suffer a cold, epileptic fit
or heart attack. "If it's true for just one case," he says, "we're on
the cusp of a whole new wave of medical technology."

LIGHT GUN FIRES PHOTONS ONE BY ONE
The first photon gun capable of firing single particles of light
over optical fibers was unveiled on Tuesday. Since quantum encryption
works only if the key is sent using individual photons, the breakthrough
may remove one of the final obstacles keeping perfectly secure messages
from being sent over standard telephone fibers.Researchers at Toshiba's
Cambridge Research Laboratory in the UK have developed a light-emitting
diode that produces up to 1000 single photons per second, allowing a
data transfer rate of 1 megabits per second.

INFINEON & IBM COLLABERATE ON NEW MEMORY TECH Infineon and IBM have
launched a program to research phase-change memory, material that
retains data by changing its structure between crystalline and
amorphous. Phase change memory has the advantage that data doesn't
depend on an electrical charge, so, like flash memory it persists when a
computer is turned off. On the other hand, phase change memories can
wear out mechanically.

HITACHI DEVELOPS WRIST SENSOR FOR REMOVE MONITORING OF PULSES
Electronics manufacturer Hitachi Ltd. said Tuesday it has fabricated a
prototype wrist-worn sensor that can transmit pulse data to a remote
monitoring center. The company said it will be useful for monitoring the
health and other conditions of elderly people who live alone. The
prototype contains what Hitachi says is the smallest sensor with
communications functions in the world, in addition to a battery. It
measures 6 centimeters long, 4 cm wide and 1.5 cm high. Pulse and other
data of sensor wearers will be radioed to a remote computer for
recording and monitoring. (Kyodo News)

NTT COMMUNICATIONS TO OFFER FRAGRANCES VIA THE INTERNET
NTT Communications Corp said Monday it has
developed a technology to offer fragrances via the Internet. The
technology uses a scent-generation device that is hooked up to a
personal computer, according to NTT Communications. When a scent is
converted into data, the information is sent to the device via the
Internet. The device then blends fragrant materials stored in it and
creates the scent.
The device can produce almost any fragrance, says an NTT Communications
official. (Kyodo News)
NEW ZEALAND POST ROLLS OUT IP NETWORK
The New Zealand government owned NZ Post has announced that it will
roll out IP telephony network in couple of months. This will be the
second largest network in the country and will enable the company to
save nearly $2 million in the next four to five years. The company plans
to completely change over to the IP network and will introduce 150 such
wireless phones in the office of the Kiwibank. Earlier the American
company Cisco had supplied NZ Post with 2700 IP phones. NZ Post has
wired its various offices at Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland.
