NEGROPONTE STICKS TO HIS GUNS Nicholas Negroponte, professor at MIT and former director of the university's Media Lab, has responded to critics by reasserting his determination to develop a $100 laptop for developing nations.
Negroponte said he has raised $29 million for his initiative, called One Laptop per Child, which has the backing of companies including Google, Advanced Micro Devices, Red Hat, and Quanta. Chief among Negroponte's critics are Microsoft and Intel, both of which have said the idea is fundamentally flawed. Negroponte dismissed those comments, insisting that providing such technology to children in developing nations will have a real impact on education and other kinds of development. Negroponte said his organization still plans to begin shipping computers--between 5 and 10 million of them--in early 2007 to countries including China, India, Egypt, Brazil, Thailand, Nigeria, and Argentina. http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70584-0.html

YOUR MONEY IS COMING IN If there is any political issue that could use a dose of scientific rigor, it is migration. U.S. immigration policy is widely regarded as a total mess, the European melting pot produces pelting mobs, and all over the world tall fences have been constructed to keep facts from entering the debate. One of the most far-reaching aspects of migration often gets ignored altogether: remittances--the money and gifts that migrants send back to families and friends. http://cl.exct.net/?ffcb10-fe5d11797266077d7316-fdfb15737467027b72147874-ff3 310707762

AUTO-FOCUS EYEGLASSES Scientists at The University of Arizona have developed new switchable, flat, liquid crystal diffractive lenses that can adaptively change their focusing power. This development opens the way for next-generation "smart" eyeglasses -- glasses with built-in automatic focus. In the foreseeable future, for example, you won't change prescription eyeglasses -- your eye doctor will just tweak a new prescription into the specs you already own. You could even program your glasses for better than 20-20 vision. http://link.abpi.net/l.php?20060406A8

FROG CROAKS IN ULTRASOUND A rare frog uses ultrasound to communicate, a clever tool that helps it overcome the noise of the waterfalls it lives in, researchers say. http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1592962.htm
STRESS HORMONE CONQUERS PHOBIAS When phobics are exposed to what they fear--be it spiders or public speaking--they experience a surge in stress hormones known as glucocorticoids. These compounds help prepare the body for action, whether fight or flight. Now researchers have found that further raising levels of the stress hormones in the body can actually reduce a phobic's anxiety. http://cl.exct.net/?ffcb10-fe5e11797266077d7315-fdfb15737467027b72147874-ff3 310707762
