VoIP DRIVES CABLE SUCCESS
Cable providers currently account for slightly more than half of the VoIP market, and specialist providers tally another 37%. That leaves a mere 11% for telcos whose traditional lifeline has been voice communications.

WHAT THE SKYPE/POLYCOM NEWS MEANS TO VoIP

On the surface, it may not seem like big news ... Polycom, a leader in conferencing, and Skype, a leader in VoIP, come together to make a new product - a portable speakerphone that works with Skype. But, aside from allowing you to have conference calls with other Skype users the product is a harbinger of great things to come.

DID YOU REMEMBER SEEING THAT?

It was a stunt that launched a thousand conspiracy theories. Market researcher James Vicary claimed in 1957 that he could get movie-goers to "drink Coca-Cola" and "eat popcorn" by flashing those messages on the screen for such a short time that viewers were unaware of it. People were outraged, and the practice was banned in the UK, Australia and the US.But Vicary's study was fabricated, and scientists who have since tried to replicate it have largely failed. But now researchers have shown that, if the conditions are right, subliminal advertising to promote a brand can be made to work surprisingly well...

30K,000 LAPTOPS, NOT EXACTLY GENTLY USED, FOR $48 APIECE

For sale: more than 30,000 laptops. Gently used? Well, not exactly. But the price is hard to beat. Maine's seventh- and eighth-graders are getting new Apple laptop computers this fall. That leaves about 30,000 old Apple iBooks, and schools are being given the opportunity to purchase them at a bargain price of $48 apiece.

At that price, some school districts can't resist paying to keep the old ones even though they're getting new ones this fall.

SHUTTING DOWN ALZHEIMER's

More than a decade ago few people were optimistic about the prospects for defeating Alzheimer's. Scientists knew so little about the biology of the disease, and its origins and course were thought to be hopelessly complex. Recently, however, researchers have made tremendous progress toward understanding the molecular events that appear to trigger the illness, and they are now exploring a variety of strategies for slowing or halting these destructive processes.
