Net loss for the quarter was $24.8 million, or 18 cents per share, compared with a loss of $22.3 million, or 19 cents per share, in the year-ago period. The 2005 quarter included 5 cents per share in charges for debt extinguishment. Excluding stock-based compensation and debt-extinguishment costs, the company lost 7 cents per share in the recent quarter. Togiola Tulafono. Tulafono has been pushing to have American Samoa linked to the Southern Cross-owned fiber-optic cable that runs from the U.S. West Coast through Hawaii and Fiji to Australia. American Samoa would hook up in Fiji, and the governor has already conducted a site visit of the area. Tulafono said a call center in Pago Pago would open once the fiber-optic cable is installed. The operation would initially create 200 to 300 jobs with the potential to expand to more than 1,000 workers, he added. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/4533437.html CHINESE MAKER OFFERS $129 PC Tian En GX-2 uses a TV instead of a monitor A Chinese PC maker introduced a low-cost PC designed for customers in rural China that can be used with a TV as a display.__Sichuan Sinomanic Technology LLC in Chengdu developed the $129 Tian En GX-2, which is being pitched as a low-cost system that can help narrow the "digital divide" between China's rural and urban areas.__The GX-2 is based on a 400MHz MIPS processor from Raza Microelectronics Inc. It runs either a version of the Linux operating system or FutureAlpha, a Chinese-developed operating system. The GX-2 has 128MB of DDR (double data rate) DRAM, one USB 2.0 port, a 10/100Mbit/sec. Ethernet adapter and a 1GB Secure Digital memory card to store data.__The PC, which does not include a monitor, has a VGA output for computer monitors as well as a TV output. This capability could help some users save money as TVs are found in most homes across China. XI'AN TO GO WiFi The city of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, China, will get 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots: Although the press release describes provider Along as turning Xi'an into a "Wi-Fi city," it's not a city-wide Wi-Fi network so much as an extensive network of hotspots. The city covers nearly 900 square miles, and 1,000 access points doesn't provide enough density for residential use, of course. The release says 7m people live there; Encyclopedia Britannica cites a 2003 estimate of city population at 2.7m. The company will add a number of hotspots at universities and "tertiary institutions," by which I have no idea what's meant. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070206/cntu015.html?.v=17 WIRELESS ZONE DMCA EXEMPTION COULD UNLOCK CELL PHONES Last November, the Librarian of Congress adopted half a dozen exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, among them one that might give cell phone phone users greater freedom to move between carriers with their mobile devices.
